Itinerary: The Best Family Day Out in Melbourne

Looking for things to do in Melbourne with kids? From morning ’til night, this itinerary is full of fun family activities to score some serious parent points!

Start your day right. Breakfast and coffee is both a delight and a serious business in Melbourne. Experience bustling inner-inner-city cafe culture and head to the local favourite, Temperance Society. This family-friendly cafe is full of yummy and healthy goodies like colourful granola bowls and vanilla and mango pannacotta. Other great inner-city options include Aliza’s Cafe and Mr Burton’s.

Morning Activity

With bellies happy, burn off brekky at the ultimate indoor playground, located in Chadstone Shopping Centre; the only of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Melbourne is a one-stop attraction for curious and creative families with 11 build and play zones, including 2 rides and a 4D cinema. With more than two million LEGO® bricks to get crafty with, you can spend hours letting your imagination run wild.

Everyone will be kept happy, even the youngest of the family. The littlies can play make-believe with cute farm animals at DUPLO® Farm Adventure. The big kids can head down to the tracks for a friendly car race at the LEGO® Racers: Build & Test zone or explore the bricktastic city of Melbourne as a giant at MINILAND®. To get rid of excess energy, they can also go safely wild at LEGO® City Fire Academy soft play area. Remember to visit the Master Model Builder at a Creative Workshop whose skills will blow your bricks away.

To fully cater to families, LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre is wheelchair and stroller accessible. There are family restrooms and baby changing rooms too. And don’t worry, no matter the nature of Melbourne’s temperamental weather, you’re safe indoors at LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre.

Enjoy a hearty picnic amongst the leafy surrounds of The Royal Botanic Gardens. And be sure to check out the ‘What’s On’ section, so you don’t miss out on seasonal exhibits that are great for kids. At The Royal Botanic Gardens, there’s plenty of space to relax or run around and play. Budding botany experts will love the interactive Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden. It has nature games and a water feature that’ll bring out all the smiles.

Afternoon Activity

Hop on the free shuttle bus, from LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre to the underwater world at SEA LIFE Melbourne. Marvel at an underwater oasis of graceful seahorses, majestic rays and huge sharks, as well as the hundreds of colourful local and tropical fish. Here’s a hot (or cold!) tip: if your kids are 14+, treat them to a sub-Antarctic penguin expedition. Everyone will be suited up in snow gear to get up-close with cheeky King and Gentoo penguins waddling, slipping, and sliding on the ice right by your feet. Get your camera ready!

Combine your visit to LEGOLAND® Discovery Center with SEA LIFE Melbourne and SAVE! With the Melbourne Big Ticket; you can visit 2 great attractions, for 1 low price.

There are plenty of family-friendly restaurants in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. It is arguably Australia’s foodie capital, after all. Close to SEA LIFE – who doesn’t love pizza? +39 Pizzeria will satisfy all, or try the Americana-style Trunk Diner, which has juicy burgers with a bonus garden to play in. Then there’s Gazi with its unforgettable menu full of indulgent treats like honey doughnuts! Mmmmm, thanks, Mum and Dad!
