Rainy Day Toddler Activities in Melbourne

It’s raining, it’s pouring, the kids are saying ‘it’s boring!’ When the sun’s shining, the great outdoors takes care of all things entertainment; from scootering to running through the sprinkler. And while a rainy day is always a welcome change, when it’s bucketing down outside, keeping your kinder occupied can be challenging.

We’re no strangers to rain in Melbourne, so it’s handy to have some adventures up your sleeve when it’s stormy. Here are some things to do in Melbourne to help you steer clear of the screen traps, and keep your kids busy.

Dip in the Downpour

Even if you baulk at the thought of swimming on a rainy day, odds are your little one wouldn’t think twice. In Melbourne, we’re spoilt for choice with a plethora of indoor pools where pint-sized swimmers can splash the day away, and even better – most of them are heated. Get to the pool early to avoid the cloudy-day crowds and make sure you tire your little ones out so they can spend a quiet afternoon at home with a board game or two.

Get Busy With Books

Our beloved libraries are treasured book and story hubs, especially when it’s bucketing down outside. To while away a couple of rainy hours, head straight for a comfy corner of your local library, and if your kids are of reading age, challenge them to find five books with a theme. If they can’t read, you can bring out your best character voices and bring the story to life. When it’s time to go, let your kids choose their favourite two books to borrow.

Free Play is the Way

Free play is how children experience and digest the world around them. It’s their most natural form of play, so as parents, it’s also an easy way to engage with them and let them lead us into their world. A wet weather day is a great time to either play with them or alongside them; draw something together, or draw separately. Get down on your child’s level, compliment their play, and don’t cramp their style with too many suggestions. Open-ended toys, like LEGO®, make space for loads of creativity and you’ll enjoy it too.

Discover the Ultimate Indoor playground in Melbourne

The best place to wait out the wet weather is to visit Australia’s ultimate indoor LEGO® playground. Designed especially for 3-10-year-olds, and a blast for the entire family; come and get among more than two million LEGO® bricks for a bricktastic experience. The best part is, it fosters creative play; the kids can get absorbed in discovering, constructing, and bringing their imagination to life.

Become a giant at MINILAND® Melbourne or create a colossal tower at our Earthquake Tables. See how the legendary bricks are made on our LEGO® Factory Tour and get some pointers from our Master Model Builder at our LEGO® Creative Workshops. Build the ultimate race car, and then go head-to-head for the track record, or immerse in the elements at the LEGO® 4D Cinema. And, if your little ones are feeling daring, the Kingdom Quest and Merlin’s Apprentice rides are great fun.

Because some of the ‘play zones’ have height restrictions, toddlers will have a ball at the LEGO® City Soft Play area or interacting with the farm animals at our DUPLO™ Farm. Designed for children and families, there are restrooms, baby changing facilities, and a café – the attraction is also wheelchair and stroller accessible.

And to make it easier, while it's raining outside, at Chadstone, there are 10,000 free underground car parking spaces so you won’t get wet.
